Sand tips #1 / By Jeff Snyder
Figured I would throw down some tips today. Hopefully me and the guys can get our rigs out to do some sand running in a week or two and thought that maybe i could share some advice i have found over the years...part one is tire selection.
Tires-
tires are not really that big of a deal. Sure, paddles are nice, but just any set of offroad style tire will work. Rc's are light and as long as you have a light trigger finger, you should be able to get going. After that, hammer down and go. If you can afford paddles, i suggest the paddle from panther. The 2.2" paddles i have found to be the best overall. The grab and go like no other and fit almost any vehicle with ease. Next is the sct (2.2/3.0) size paddle. Theses are also very good and look great. Both of these tires work well with wheel speed, but also can make use of your torque.
Then you have the proline slingshot (2.2/3.0) and proline sand paw (2.2). These i consider an okay tire the sand paw works better than the slingshot and both of these need wheel speed to work. These do not grab and go, but rather dig and grip.
There is also a paddle tire from hpi (2.2). These are comparable to the proline selection, but are just slightly smaller in overall height.
Lastly, the big boys....proline sand paw in the 2.8" variety. These are awesome. But that is mainly due to their size rather than the tire. They are just big. The grab, they go, they float across the sand and also allow you to go fast. They make use of your torque and speed and can also just crawl over the sand without the fear of digging in and getting buried. But, because of there sheer size, may not be the best choice for your vehicle.
Regardless of tire choice, seal up the rims. Most rims come with vent holes in them. Cover those vent holes up. Tape, glue, whatever you can use. Sand will get in there! Do your best to keep it out.
